Born in 1938 in Caracas to the family of a British diplomat, Charles was drawn early on to the "odd & extraordinary" of his country’s vast jungle wilderness. Inspired by English explorer Percy Fawcett, upon whom he models his own stoicism, in 1961 Charles set off to find the mythical lost city of Z.
